Cashman’s Gansey Sweater KAL!
Many of you have seen one of our regular customers knitting a gansey sweater for several members of her family. Ganseys are sweaters traditionally worn by fisherfolk, especially in the UK - Cornwall, and the Channel Islands. These are warm working garments if knit in the traditional way, and have lots of gussets so you have great freedom of movement when you wear it. Traditionally they are knit with a fingering or sport-weight wool and are dense - to fend off the cold and the damp while out on a boat. Fortunately, some designers have run with the tradition and created pullovers that keep the style but knit up faster on thicker yarn. These are classic pullovers with style and flair for the whole family!
We’ve chosen two patterns that work up in Worsted weight yarn:
1) Fisherlad Guernsey, Yankee Knitter Designs, is a pared down gansey design that is a New England classic, perfect for town or for boat. This pattern is sized from newborn through adult L/XL. $6 available on Ravelry or through the Stitch House.
2) Beagle, Norah Gaughan designer, adds a bit more visual interest on the body while keeping all the charm of the classic gansey. Here is a chance for you to work together with others and make another fabulous Norah Gaughan design. This pattern is written for adult sizes, ranging from XS to XXL. $8 available on Ravelry or throughthe Stitch House.
Both of these patterns are knit flat in pieces and seamed. The knitting goes faster than for a seamless sweater - no increases to worry about - and the seams on the finished pullover give it structure. We’ll show you all the tricks for easy and professional seaming and finishing, and together we will create a masterpiece. So many skills learned making your Gansey!
These sweaters would be fabulous in the Quince & Co. Osprey yarn we now carry at Stitch House! Plymouth Galway would be a great choice, too. We’ll have a great sweater to wear once the cooler weather of Fall arrives - or an early start on your holiday gift knitting!
We’ll meet at Stitch House on Thursday afternoons 4 - 5:30, starting August 4th and running through September 15th. If Annissa can knit a sweater in three days, we can knit one in six weeks! This KAL is for the newer sweater knitter or the more advanced one; you’ll get camaraderie and support, advice and encouragement - and quality knitting time!
This is a free class with purchase of yarn from the Stitch House. The class fee $30 is to hold seat. $30 will be credit towards purchase of supplies for this project.
Thursdays August 18th, & 25th September 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd & 29th. You can also drop in to one of our Knit 102 sessions on Tuesdays or Sundays if you want more social knitting time, and help is always available during regular store hours.
